Our lab studies microbial communities as barometers of ecosystem properties over space and time. We seek to understand the fundamental rules of how microbiomes sense, process, and respond to internal and external signals from their environments, and how they evolve both as a community and as individuals to changing environments using cutting edge computational approaches, grounded in biology. Our lab has identified gut chemistry as an unrecognized driver of microbial metabolism, discovered widespread phage populations, and pioneered computational approaches to improve discovery in – and inferences we can make from – microbiome data.
